This Sherlock Holmes translation had made me learn few great things. Two of them I would like to share:
www.xobdo.org is an online Assamese Dictionary, which is English-to-Assamese, Assamese-to-English and also many other languages prevalent in North-East. That is community project and new words are added everyday. Not only you can use the dictionary, you can even help make it better by adding new words. Till now around 35000 words are there and still counting. However, for my need it was a bit inadequate, as most words that I needed were not in the dictionary. But, this is not a fault with the website, as those words are rarely used. And, I shall be happy if the webmasters of the site can make it a bit faster.

I left Assam in 1963 for higher training in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering. I am settled in the Netherlands – living here since 1968. I am retired person. I maintain an India centric site. A few months back in an e-mail exchange I was made aware of the fact that there is hardly any Assamese contents on the Internet and most of the contents which is there, are not accessible to the internet crawlers. There is no support for the Assamese scripts in Yahoo, MSN, Google, WebDuniya etc. That led me to contact a few of my young friends and we formed a group under the name ই-জোনাকী যুগ E-junaki Jug. The URL is http://sites.google.com/site/ejonakijug/home. The primary goal of this initiative is to increase the volume of Assamese content on the Internet. We have done some work on this area. We are exploring the possibilities of submitting a petition to the Unicode organization to include Assamese subset in Unicode. We still have to find out the feasibility of requesting a separate subset for Assamese or a new Unicode range for Assamese, in an all inclusive Unicode range, (i.e. rename Bengali Unicode range for political reason and expand it to include all regional variations).
Last week we presented our activities to the press in Assam. We received very positive reactions both from the press and also from the public and started a pilot project. One of our group members is now developing a translator to translate text from Ramdhenu to Unicode.
